Jun. 24th, 2004 10:00 amfinally got to the theater for coffee & cigarettes last night . . .
sure, it was uneven, but i think such a construction would be nearly impossible to mount smoothly. the pace changes were nice, even if some of the segments wandered a bit too much. buscemi's southern accent was surprisingly good. watching blanchett act against herself was fun, but not nearly as revelatory as some reviewers claimed (i far prefer jeremy irons in dead ringers with that particular trick). the best segment, by far, was alfred molina and steve coogan. simultaneously unbelievably uncomfortable to watch and extremely hilarious. coogan was really good, but molina owned that shit. all in all, it was much funnier than i expected it to be, and even roberto benigni didn't annoy me, as he was only onscreen for about 5 minutes.
oh, and the tom waits/iggy pop skit was great. when tom hurts iggy's feelings, and he gets this sad look in his big ol' puppy eyes, half the audience sighed an audible "awwwww."
