spider-man 2 - wow. it's shocking that it was so much better than the first one (which i enjoyed, but not so much after the first viewing or two). raimi's pacing and construction of the narrative was excellent, and made the action sequences that much more impressive and exciting. i was practically hiding under my seat when molina's transformation sequence finally arrived. and when i say "finally" i wonder if the movie will actually seem flawed to some audiences - too much talking and not enough web-slinging? i was satisfied, because the action sequences were so well done (the train scenes, in particular), but it IS a long movie, and there wasn't nearly as many battle sequences as i thought there was in the first one.

oh, and after coffee & cigarettes and spider-man 2, alfred molina is totally rocking my socks.

secret window - damn. that was BAD. bad, bad, bad. bad. really bad.

know what's weird? alfred molina is currently playing tevyeh in the most recent fiddler on the roof revival. because you know as a jew, when i look at alfred molina i totally think semite.

actually, one of molina's parents is jewish, so he has at least some legit cultural/religious access to playing the role. maybe not as much as zero, but apparently molina's finding way deeper pathos in tevye than mostel ever did (because he was too busy playing it for laughs).

'sephardic' means a very conservative jewish person, right? i'm a big ol' goy, so i'm not so up on my yiddish. if so, don't know if he is or not - i just heard an interview with him on fresh air a week or so ago and they covered his early years a bit, but not in too much detail.

no, the sephardim are the jews descended from the spanish/portuguese/moors/etc. the non-eastern european jews, to broadly over-state things. still, a brotherman's a brotherman!

heh. since anthony quinn died, i think molina has become the go-to "ethnic" actor who isn't really terribly "ethnic." see also shaloub, tony.
