saw whale rider last night - despite some very good performances and lovely cinematography, i didn't enjoy it all that much. i found the story to be rather predictable, and the last sequence with the whales just dragged.

we watched about half of alice, by jan svankmajer, a czech filmmaker/puppet animator. some of his constructions are fascinating, but i'd be far more interested in a unique film rather than a retelling of a familiar story. plus, it's got a really annoying narrative trope. still, it only makes me more interested in little otik, kind of a "golem baby" movie svankmajer made in 2000.

ETA - hee! i just remembered where i'd seen cliff curtis (the absentee father in whale rider) recently - as pablo escobar in blow!

dude! that movie is so hard for me to get through because i have been so warped by my mother's obsessive noticing of cleanliness. that little girl is fucking filthy! her knuckles are grey!

however, for years after i have been obsessed with having a taxidermied rabbit in a glass case. not that i ever will have one, but i want one.

I agree with you on Whale Rider. I found it boring and forgettable. The only thing I remember about that movie is the talent show (or whatever it was) scene. Those tears were hardcore, man.

I've been wanting to see that version of Alice for years.

i agree about the talent show scene. castle-hughes has a lot of potential, and i'd like to see what else she'll be capable of in the future.
