Jul. 14th, 2004 09:03 amsaw whale rider last night - despite some very good performances and lovely cinematography, i didn't enjoy it all that much. i found the story to be rather predictable, and the last sequence with the whales just dragged.
we watched about half of alice, by jan svankmajer, a czech filmmaker/puppet animator. some of his constructions are fascinating, but i'd be far more interested in a unique film rather than a retelling of a familiar story. plus, it's got a really annoying narrative trope. still, it only makes me more interested in little otik, kind of a "golem baby" movie svankmajer made in 2000.
ETA - hee! i just remembered where i'd seen cliff curtis (the absentee father in whale rider) recently - as pablo escobar in blow!
