movie stuff . . .
the boy and i are going to a few films at the chicago international film festival, which starts this weekend -
* we're going to see an early screening of brad anderson's the machinist (with christian bale and jennifer jason leigh). it's about a factory worker who hasn't slept in a year, and he begins to have bizarre hallucinations. quite appropriately, we're seeing a midnight show. it's been one of my greatly anticipated fall releases, so i'm really excited.
* also, the taste of tea, a japanese film by katsuhito ishii, who did the anime segment in kill bill vol. 1. from what i can tell, it will be in a similar vein as happiness of the katakuris, but perhaps without the songs.
* the journey, an indian film by a chicago director, about two women who develop a lesbian relationship, and the controversy that surrounds them in their kerala village. i might also go see another indian film, raincoat, starring aishwarya rai.
i finally got around to seeing vanity fair yesterday. i'm not familiar with the book, but i know nair made some character changes, particularly to becky. in any case, it was quite odd. it's probably my least favorite of her films, though i thought witherspoon was rather good. i thought it rather bloodless, without much of the spark i would expect from a writer like thackeray. however, it will be an excellent text for my thesis.

it's not really all 90's girl power, though - witherspoon as becky is much more like tracy flick from election than her character in legally blonde. nair's really drawn to projects that deal with outsiders, especially women, so perhaps the fact that it was such a problematic film will make it an especially good thesis discussion topic.
