since i'm currently bored at my father's house, waiting for honda of salinas to call me back about their fuck-up, i'll entertain you all with

after my hectic day with the car, i finally arrived at m1's house in s.f., ready for massive amounts of alcohol. we decided to go to the redwood room at the clift hotel, as most of her nor cal friends were not down with its swankness. it was a pretty cool bar, and i think they have real bill viola video pieces on the walls, but i'm not sure, 'cause i couldn't find anyone to ask.

anyway, we got shitfaced: i paid for all of one drink all night long. oh, and a dollar for the bus. we met an odd trio (horny straight boy, swedish girl, gorgeous gay boy) who were extremely amusing, so i talked to them for an hour or two while m1 entertained a dubiously attractive man of about 45. heh. we then met a bunch of random guys who worked at the lawrence livermore labs, and their friend, who goes to college in illinois. he and i bonded over several vodka tonics and my impending move to chicago. when the lights came up, these boys wanted to take us to afterhours, but all of our options sucked, so we talked them into getting a bottle of vodka at the shady local liquor store, and going back to illinois boy's room at the clift (which is a VERY nice hotel). however, his sister and her boyfriend were both sleeping there, so we went to the roof instead.

for those of you who were not in the san francisco area on friday night, it was cold. very cold. and foggy. and on the roof of a 15-story building, it was even colder. but hey: we had vodka to warm us! so we ran around the roof for a while, until a security guard kicked us off, at which point the boys suggested the rooftop pool of the holiday inn downtown. how they knew about this is anyone's best guess. the hotel was totally deserted, so nobody got in our way, but it was also completely impossible to find a bathroom, even after i spent a good 10 minutes searching the kitchen of the 3rd-floor banquet room (narrowly avoiding capture by two of the early-rising chefs). m1 and i both politely declined a dip in the pool with the boys, as the pool temp seemed to be only about 5 degrees warmer than the 4am s.f. morning.

from this point, the three of us dry, intelligent people, and three very cold, very unhappy boys headed to a diner populated by a number of people of questionable gender, and absolutely no hash browns. it was about 5:30 at this point, and i loudly announced, to anyone who would listen, that i had been awake for nearly 24 hours. yay! having absolutely nothing left to do except watch the sun come up, we figured it might be best to head home, but not until two of the guys were invited to take shots of vodka from m1's navel, a fitting cap on our evening.

m1 and i slept for about three hours, then piled our hungover asses into the rental car, to pick up my car from salinas. for some reason, we thought that it would be fun to take a 2-hour detour to the crowded, uncomfortable, un-air conditioned winchester mystery house on a 95-degree san jose afternoon. surprisingly enough, we were right, it WAS fun. and if anyone ever asks you WHY mrs. winchester built her house so obsessively, here is our answer for you: bitch was crazy.

yeah, that seemed to be the general idea, s_q: but the tour guide kept telling us, "no one really knows why . . ." um, yes, i think we DO know why: the woman had a seance room! just for contacting the spirits! bitch was crazy!

i would highly recommend the basic tour. it's about $17, and afterward, you can wander around outside all you like, and the gardens in front are very pretty. it's sad that they're doing so much building in the neighborhood: there's now a retirement community right across the street, and a big mall, and a very oddly-designed movie theater.
