ahhh, the first night of sleep in my new bed ([livejournal.com profile] monkeythoughts, i got the sultan rymden mattress, and i'm waiting on the frame for a little while. right now, it's just on slats). i actually was able to sleep in this morning! i've been waking up at 6 and 7am, when what i really need right now is a few good nights of sleep. thank you, mattress.

despite my fed ex drama yesterday, i was still able to cut down a good portion of my to-do list. i doubt i'll make it to school today, since i have to wait around again for fed ex to pick my t.v. back up, but as long as i make it to the leasing office, and to trader joe's (i need TOFU!), i'll feel somewhat accomplished. plus, i still have some decorating to do. yay, decorating!

however, i'm kind of bummed that my friend r1 hasn't called me yet. i called him on saturday, and he was out of town for the weekend, but he said he'd get in touch on sunday or monday. i called him again yesterday, so hopefully he'll get back to me today. my roommates are really nice, but i'd like to see the friendly face of someone who actually knows me.

TOFU:

Ride the red line north a few stops to Argyle. Make a left out of the station, cross both ways (east and south) at the 4-way stop at Winthrop street, continue walking east for another half-block along Argyle until you see a grocery store with a parking lot and big sign that says VIET HOA. Enter this grocery store.

Go through the first room of the store (taking your time to admire and shop for all sorts of tasty goodies) and back into the second room where the fresh items are. In the refrigerator all the way in the far corner from where you enter the room, they have tofu that is freshly made in Chicago, for much cheaper than you'll pay at Trader Joe's or Whole Foods or pretty much anywhere else. I usually buy either of the two brands that come in little plastic baggies (I smell them to see which kind seems freshest that day, because I have a Smelling My Food obsession), but they also have the kinds that come in plastic packaging, as well as the aseptically sealed kind out in the main room (but that's the same Mori-Nu kind you can buy at other grocery stores, and I've never compared prices because I don't generally buy that kind).

This is my very longwinded story to say that I love Viet Hoa, and you can buy very fresh tofu there for something like ninety cents, as well as supporting any other Asian grocery addictions you may or may not have yet.

I haven't looked at their tea selection much, but I remember that they carry Tea Ren teas (Tea Ren being a pretty significant tea store in Chinatown, which is also on the red line, but a lot farther away). I'm hooked on Tealuxe (http://www.tealuxe.com) teas to the point where I don't really bother looking at teas anywhere else. Hah.

Pretty much the whole neighborhood immediately off the Argyle stop is Vietnamese/Thai/etc. Viet Hoa just happens to be my favorite grocery store among a half-dozen options in the immediate area.

The Argyle el station is even designed with a pagoda-style roof on top of it. :)

Ooh, and while you're up there, the Vietnamese restaurant just across the alley from the Viet Hoa parking lot (I can never remember its name, but if you look in the big glass windows you can see a staircase in the back left-hand corner of the shop) has THE BEST bubble tea I've had anywhere. They make it with fresh fruit - strawberry is undoubtedly the best flavor.

Even though it's a sit-down restaurant, they don't mind if you just walk up to the counter and order a bubble tea to go. I do it all the time.

Uh, does it show that I live right around the corner from this stuff? :)

Ohh, have you found Fuck Corporate Groceries (http://www.fuckcorporategroceries.net) yet?
