why in the hell is the spears clan so damn ignorant when it comes to birth control? someone needs to explain this to me.

ETA - my favorite quote from jezebel posters - "i understood knocked up as a cautionary tale, not a life plan."

Well, at least she's not living in her sister's shadow!

Ha ha ha.

Seriously, though, this whole thing is a mess. And now we don't even get to hear about how Lily Allen is pregnant with her Chemical Brother man because silly Jamie Lynn has taken all the pregnancy glory away.

I would say abstinence-only sex ed, but I'm pretty neither of them went to high school!

I know I've made jokingly derogatory comments about Britney being from Kentwood, La and therefore being white trash before. But this time I will tell y'all something that's actually true: some parishes (counties) in Louisiana don't even allow abstinence-only sex ed. They allow no sex ed what so ever because even abstinence-only acknowledges that sex exists. Guess how high their rates of teen pregnancy are?

I'm not sure if Kentwood is located in one of these no-sex parishes, but I think it's a pretty state-wide thing for it to be regarded as normal (or at least not abnormal) to have your first child before the age of 18.

that is horrifying.

however, i think brdgt is right that neither of them went to high school. with ALL that MONEY, don't you think SOMEONE would have introduced them to a kindly physician who could explain where babies come from?

it's like this today show thing i saw about abstinence a few weeks ago, where one woman said straight-out that the women in her family have this tendency to get pregnant, so abstinence is the way to go for her. okay, sure, far be it from me to judge choices that are made for spiritual or deeply personal reasons, but . . . there's a whole WORLD of preventative measures out there! come on! when you already have a baby at a young age and then start preaching abstinence, i find the whole thing to be very half-baked.

You'd think their stage mom would have made sure that they started on birth control asap so that an unplanned pregnancy wouldn't jeopardize their earning potential careers. Then again, maybe Jamie Lynn did it on purpose so that she could retire early.

but her book on parenthood has been put on indefinite hold! that's got to hurt the old pocketbook, not to mention the ego . . .

That sounds about right. My mom's family is from a rural county in Tennessee (plus belong to very conservative branch of Assembly of God where you can't even play musical instruments because that's sinful) and quite a few of my 2nd, 3rd etc cousins became parents either during or right after their senior year of high school. Same thing for the (again, conservative and no sex-ed allowed) villages I worked in during Peace Corps - it took me awhile to piece together why people kept asking me where my kids were. And they were all pretty shocked when they finally figured out that I was 24 and hadn't been pregnant yet.

then again, i grew up in a pretty liberal small town - we had a progressive sex ed campaign, and still a lot of teen pregnancies.

Hmmm, then perhaps it's small towns with nothing for the kids to keep from getting bored?

i think we have a winner! this would also explain the prominence of drug usage in my hometown and towns nearby as well.
