saw house of sand and fog yesterday, and i'm still thinking about it. i found certain elements of the plot to be somewhat convenient and predictable, but the characters themselves, and the actors who played them, were superb. it's definitely going to stick with me for a while.

speaking of somewhat predictable, i finished oryx & crake, and it was pretty much what i expected. not that i'm complaining, mind you - it was eminently readable and quite comprehensive in scope (the particular way in which human society may well collapse in on itself).

tabris bought me neal stephenson's cryptonomicon, as i've never read any of stephenson's work. i don't think i'll be able to blaze through it quite as rapidly as the atwood, but it's very intriguing so far.

i'm not looking forward to going back to work in a half an hour.

Stick with Cryptonomicon - I'll sound like an ass for saying this, but: the first couple hundred pages are rough, but honestly when I got to only 200 pages left I thought "damn, there's only 200 hundred pages left, NO!"

Thanks for the review on House of Sand and Fog - that is sort of what I was think based on the reviews, good performances, weak plot.

I started reading the book for "House of Sand and Fog", but couldn't finish it. I really liked "Oryx and Crake" probably because I'm really interested in biotechnology.

yeah, all the bio-tech stuff was fascinating, and i really liked how all of these fascinatingly complex organisms & inventions were generally used for such mundane & cosmetic purposes.
