Feb. 26th, 2004 10:18 amthe boy and i were talking about HBO shows last night - comparing oz to the sopranos to the wire, etc. i think one of the reasons that i find oz preferable to the sopranos is the level of social commentary that oz contains, which the sopranos doesn't quite reach. don't get me wrong, i looooove me some sopranos, and as a drama, it's certainly one of the best shows ever on television, but it's still about a very insular, upper-middle class world, a flip side to sex & the city. despite the violence, there's a sheen of class to the mobster way of life, an element of wish fulfillment and fetishistic consumerism that is lacking in oz and the wire, which both do an amazing job of showing the audience an urban world that is not romanticized, portraying the injustice inherent in being poor and (often) a minority in america.
that being said, i can't WAIT for the new season of the sopranos to begin.
