i just got back from j1's graduation. after the ceremony, her momma (who is like my surrogate mother) told me this wonderful story about a hindu priestess:
when the villagers decided to raise a woman to the level of priestess, all of the priests were quite satisfied. it made them look very progressive, to have a woman holding a position of power. but when they saw how much the people loved her, they grew quite jealous of the priestess, and sniped about her whenever they got a chance.
one day, all of the priests & the priestess were on a boat outing, and, in the middle of the river, the boat ran out of gas. no one could decide what to do, until the priestess took the gas can from the boatmen, and declared, "i will go." she stepped out of the boat, and walked upon the water toward the shore.
the priests, watching her go, said, naturally: "we knew she couldn't swim."
