being "grounded" for the weekend is excellent. i got an enormous amount of reading done yesterday and this morning, and now i'm settling in to work on a paper for a little bit.

i want to go to new york for my birthday next year, because the new christo/jeanne-claude project will be up for 16 days in february. i'm dying to see one of their works in person, and there was the sweetest article about them in this week's new yorker.

Oh, what is their new project? I think maybe our New Yorker subscription ran out. Heh.

I just realized (from looking at your user profile) that your birthday is six days after mine. Same year and everything. Happy birthday, a month too late. :)

hey, happy birthday, fellow chicagoan aquarius!

the new project is in central park - they're erecting more than 7,000 "gates" of bright saffron fabric that will extend along all of the walking paths in the park. they've been trying to erect the project since the 70's, but were only able to do so since bloomberg (a collector of theirs) became mayor. it'll be their first new york-based work, though they've lived in the city since the 60's.

Neat! I am sure you know a lot more about their works than I do, but I've been somewhat fascinated by them ever since watching a film or two about their works in college. I remember one in particular about building an enormous fabric wall through ranch country in the western US, and thinking for a lot of the film that what they were doing was mostly a meaningless waste of money - until I saw all these ranchers talking about how the installation opened their eyes to beauty in their land that they'd never seen before and never really looked at until it was concealed from their view. It sort of "clicked" then. My family is from Pennsylvania, a quick bus ride away from NYC, so maybe I'll have to see about taking my own birthday trip out there next year. :)

i was reading about that particular project ("running fence," which, incidentally, my parents remember from before i was born, since they lived in the part of california where it was installed) last week for my land art presentation. a lot of "ordinary people" really appreciate the christos' work, but they get a lot of flak from other artists who don't think their work is really art.
