because i wasn't having enough problems with expensive, hard-to-fix belongings, my computer has now decided to suck. specifically, every time i open word, it freezes on the opening screen. fabulous.

if anybody has any ideas why this is happening, or what i could do to fix it, please let me know . . .

if you have the microsoft office cd that you used to install office then i would reccomend completely uninstalling it (through the add/remove software control panel).

how long has it been since you've updated stuff on your computer?
what i'd recommend is a general sweep up: go to http://www.microsoft.com/windowsupdate and see if you have stuff that needs updating. update your anti-virus definitions and download adaware and spybot through http://www.download.com and run those as well to get rid of spyware. i control pop-ups by using the google toolbar (plus now you have google whenever you want). my computer seems to run a bit smoother if it has its regular clean-up.

hope this helps.

thanks - it's been a while since i've updated. quite a while. i'm hoping i'll find the time amid moving, since there is no DSL connection at the boy's place.

if it still isn't working, then i'll try reinstalling. i think i still have the cd from when i got the computer.

unfortunately, the machine has so many random other bugs, i'm not sure how long it is for this world . . .

If your computer on the whole is messing up it might be a good idea to format and start off fresh.

yeah, i've been thinking about that. unfortunately, i think some (not all) of the other problems are hardware-related (certain keys that intermittently don't work).

i feel SOOOO BAD about this! i know intellectually i didn't mess up your computer, but seeing as i was the last one to use word on it...

well, at least you have a lot of lj buddies who can recommend good virus scans once you can hook back up to the net. i fear, however, that sporadicity may be right - since i already did a basic virus scan last week that didn't turn up anything, if your computer can't handle word it may be the hardware that's to blame.

but whatever the problem is, i'll help out with fixing it the best i can!

dad suggested pretty much the same things, though he's a mac person, not a windows-user. sigh. i think i'll have to get it back from your house soon, and try to run some updates & stuff before i'm disconnected from the internet for an indefinite period of time . . .

oh, and i'm not mad at you or thinking you did anything, even unwittingly. my computer, unfortunately, just kinda sucks.
